چکیده

Osteosarcoma is an aggressive type of cancer primarily found in children and adolescents and current understanding of its etiology and treatments are rather limited. As a potential anti-cancer component, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) has drawn significant attention in the last few decades. However, there is limited knowledge on CLA’s effect on osteosarcoma. In this report, we tested effects of two major CLA isomers on growth of a canine osteosarcoma cell line. The results in this report suggest that the trans-10,cis-12 CLA isomer, but not the cis-9,trans-11 isomer, effectively inhibits canine osteosarcoma cell growth and induces apoptosis. Treatment with trans-10,cis-12 CLA increased expression of NSAID activated gene-1 (NAG-1), suggesting that NAG-1 may mediate trans-10,cis-12 CLA-induced apoptosis, via phosphoinositol3-kinase (PI3K) dependent mechanism. The significance of this study is that CLA might be used as a dietary supplement in prevention and/or treatment of osteosarcoma. Journal of Nature and Science, 1(4):e67, 2015

Isomer specificity of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA): 9E,11E-CLA

Conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) were identified in 1980's, since then it has been intensively studied due to its various beneficial health effects such as anti-inflammatory, anti-atherogenic, anti-carcinogenic and anti-diabetic/obesity effects. Isomer specificity of a number of CLA isomers, especially predominant isomer 9Z,11E- and 10E,12Z-CLA, is now recognized. However, the less prevalent CLA...

A Review on Biohydrogenation and Effects of Tannin on It

The process called biohydrogenation occurs mainly in ruminant animals and during it, unsaturated fatty acids, and particularly poly-unsaturated ones (linoleic and linolenic) coverts to a saturated form of stearic acid. For many years, the beneficial effects of biohydrogenation intermediate fatty acids like cis-9 trans-11 linoleic acid, the main natural isomer of conjugated linoleic acids (CLA),...

Effects of Extruded Flaxseed and Conjugated Linoleic Acid on Growth Performance in Holstein Milk-Fed Calves

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of extruded flaxseed and conjugated linoleic acid on growth performance, blood parameters in Holstein suckling calves. This experiment was carried out with 30 newborn Holstein calves with an average age of 1-8 days, and about 36±2 kg body weight, with 6 treatments and 5 replications in a completely randomized factorial design (3×2). The treat...

Conjugated Linoleic Acid Production and Optimization Via Catalytic Reaction Method Using Safflower Oil

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is one of the most physiological active fatty acids due to its positive effect on  prevention of diseases such as obesity, hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis and cancer. The aim of this study was to optimize the production of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)% in  alkali isomerization of safflower oil including  71% linoleic acid (LA)  using response surface methodology...

The effects of conjugated linoleic acid on human health-related outcomes.

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a collective term for a mixture of positional and geometric isomers of conjugated dienoic derivatives of linoleic acid. CLA has received considerable attention as a result of animal experiments that report anti-carcinogenic, anti-atherogenic and anti-diabetic properties, and modulation of body composition and immune function. Several studies of CLA supplementat...
